ProDiver Update Manager

ProDiver Update Manager is a tool that ensures that ProDiver users have up-to-date software. In Workbench, you can set the minimum version of ProDiver that can connect to DiveLine, as well as suggest that users update ProDiver if their version is earlier than the recommended version. DiveLine can host the update, or a URL can specify the location of the downloadable ProDiver update.

The ProDiver Update Manager requirements are:

  • The ProDiver application must be installed on the client computer.
  • ProDiver Update Manager must be configured on DiveLine to specify the version, enforcement level, and location of the update executable.
  • The DiveLine administrator must place the ProDiver update file where it is accessible for clients to download.
  • The ProDiver executable to be updated on the client computer must be called prodiver.exe.
  • The ProDiver executable to be downloaded from the server can be named anything, but will still replace prodiver.exe on the client computer.
  • The ProDiver directory on the client computer must allow write access of the executable files. A temporary file named prodiver-update.exe is written to the same directory as the ProDiver executable, and is removed after a successful update. The existing client prodiver.exe is renamed prodiver.exe.old and left in the directory. Subsequent upgrades will overwrite the prodiver.exe.old file.
  • NOTE:
  • You can use the default installation directory. The ProDiver installer changes permissions on the installation directory so that Windows users can modify and write to that directory, which allows the ProDiver Update Manager to update the ProDiver executable in \Program Files(x86)\Dimensional Insight.

With the update manager configured on the server, the ProDiver client on the user's computer confirms that an appropriate version is in use. If not, the user receives a message stating that ProDiver is out of date. A Start Download button appears. When the user clicks Start Download:

  • ProDiver closes

  • Some dialogs display on the screen as the application is updated

  • The ProDiver login window again opens

When the user logs in, ProDiver displays a message indicating that the version is updated. If the update fails, ProDiver aborts.

NOTE: The automatic download operates within a major release only.

To add a new instance to the update manager:

  1. In Workbench, select Tools > Server Settings.

    The General tab displays.

  2. Under Options, click the Miscellaneous chevron to expose additional settings.

  3. Click ProDiver Update Manager.

    The ClosedProDiver Update Manager dialog displays.

  4. Click Add.

  5. Select a Major Version and Point Release. For example: 7.0(39).

    NOTE: If the point release includes a decimal, enter it manually. For example: 38.3.

  6. Indicate the Enforcement option: Mandatory (upgrade is required to use ProDiver) or Suggested (upgrade is optional).

  7. Select the delivery option:

    • Use ProDiver Updater to download update—Downloads the specified version from the dataroot of the DiveLine server that the client is connecting to, using ProDiver’s internal updater. The DiveLine server administrator must place the ProDiver executable in the \dl-dataroot\download directory.

      NOTE: The File Path browse button opens a Select File dialog box to the \dl-dataroot\download directory and that is the only directory where you can choose the update. You cannot navigate to any other directory on the DiveLine server.

    • Use Web Browser to search for update—Downloads the updated version from the URL specified and maintained by the DiveLine administrator.

  8. Update the File Path or URL according to the delivery option.

    • If using the Updater, enter the File Path—name the executable in the dataroot, for example: /prodiver.exe.

    • If using another mechanism, enter the URL to view in a browser information about the update, for example: https://www.abcompany.com/diverinfo.jsp

  9. Click OK to commit the configuration.

    When entries are visible in the ProDiver Update Manager dialog list, the Edit and Delete buttons can be used.

  10. Click OK to save and close ProDiver Update Manager, or click Cancel to return to the General tab without committing the changes.
  11. Click Save to commit the changes to Server Settings.
